RM of Bengough’s story
The Rural Municipality of Bengough No. 40 incorporated on January 1, 1913. It lies in the southeast part of Saskatchewan and surrounds the town of Bengough, where the RM office is located. Within its boundaries are the localities of Harptree, Roncott and Ritchie, as well as Horizon, which was once a village until it dissolved on December 31, 1973.
Horizon holds most of the RM's recognized heritage. The St. Cunegunda Roman Catholic Church was built there in 1928, about thirty kilometres west of Ogema, and now serves as the Horizon Community Church Centre. The Horizon Federal Elevator went up in 1922 and worked until 1996, when the rail line was abandoned. A group of local farmers then bought the line and the elevator as part of Red Coat Road and Rail Ltd. A Saskatchewan Wheat Pool elevator, built in 1953, is still in use.
